Ayurvedic Medicines Without Doctor’s Advice Can Cause Serious Side Effects: CCRAS

Date:

Misleading advertisements and quack practitioners often lure people with false claims, such as complete cures for cancer and piles. Many fall prey to such ads seen in trains or public spaces, leading to worsened health conditions.

Mumbai: The popular belief that “natural medicines are always safe” can prove to be misleading and dangerous. Ayurvedic experts have warned that consuming over-the-counter (OTC) Ayurvedic medicines without proper medical consultation may lead to serious side effects. Cases have been reported where patients suffered from skin issues, eye problems, and even kidney damage.

Every year, September 23 is observed as Ayurveda Day across the globe. On this occasion, Ayurvedic doctors raised concerns about the widespread misconception that Ayurvedic medicines have no side effects.

According to Navbharat Times, Dr. Govind Reddy, In-charge Assistant Director of the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), explained that many people purchase Ayurvedic medicines after watching advertisements or based on others’ suggestions. However, these medicines often contain not just herbs, but also “Ras Aushadhi” — formulations made with minerals and metals.

Dr. Reddy highlighted that without considering proper dosage, body constitution, and the specific disease, such medicines can harm vital organs. Patients often visit clinics with complaints such as redness on the skin, dark patches, itching, burning sensations, and blurred vision. In cases of overdosing, the liver and kidneys may also suffer damage.

Govt. Urges Free Treatment at Registered Ayurvedic Centers

To ensure safe treatment, the government has made the registration and verification of Ayurvedic doctors easier. Registered practitioners are now available at villages, primary health centers, and sub-centers. The Maharashtra government has even introduced a QR code system to verify doctor credentials. CCRAS has appealed to the public to avail of the free diagnosis and treatment available at government Ayurvedic centers.

Need for Greater Awareness

Experts reveal that nearly 3–4% of patients visiting OPDs every year are those affected by the side effects of unsupervised Ayurvedic drug use. Misleading advertisements and quack practitioners often lure people with false claims, such as complete cures for cancer and piles. Many fall prey to such ads seen in trains or public spaces, leading to worsened health conditions. This growing concern has compelled the government and CCRAS to spread awareness about the safe use of Ayurveda.
