Is Your Child Addicted to the Internet? AIIMS to Offer Solutions with a New Research Center

Date:

If your child or a family member is struggling with internet addiction, leading to irritability or behavioral changes, there is no need to worry. AIIMS is set to establish a dedicated research center to help treat and curb internet addiction.

This will reportedly be the first center in the country focusing on research to combat internet and technology addiction. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has extended support in setting up this center.

Professor Yatan Pal Singh, head of the Behavioral Addiction Clinic, stated that complaints about internet and technology addiction among children and young adults have been on the rise, affecting their mental health.

According to the Economic Survey 2023-24, internet addiction is increasingly contributing to mental health issues in children and youth. Parents and schools must take measures to limit excessive usage. Yatan Pal further mentioned that this research center, with ICMR’s support, will also connect with various medical colleges across the country, paving the way for similar centers elsewhere.

AI-Based Model to Identify Internet Addiction

The research center will focus on preventing and early detection of internet addiction among children and youth. It will also train teachers, parents, and healthcare professionals to tackle technology addiction effectively. Additionally, the center will provide treatment for stress, anxiety, and depression linked to excessive internet use.

An AI-based model will be developed to identify individuals who are more vulnerable to internet addiction. A team of doctors will conduct awareness programs in schools and colleges to educate people about the risks associated with excessive internet use.

According to Yatan Pal, this center will be instrumental in addressing issues related to internet and technology addiction. The goal is to safeguard children and young people from addiction and improve their mental well-being. He asserted that this will be the first such center in the country, expected to benefit millions of children and youth by securing their future.
