The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed a significant change in land use for a 6.5-acre plot in Nahur, shifting its designation from a garden to a zoo. This plot is set to be transformed into a dedicated aviary, enhancing Mumbai’s zoological offerings.

Under the BMC’s development plan (DP), the land was initially reserved for a garden. However, with the new proposal, the status of this reservation would be altered to accommodate the creation of a specialized bird park. The BMC has issued a notification seeking public input on this proposed modification. Citizens are invited to submit their suggestions and objections within 30 days from the date of the notification’s publication.

According to the BMC’s notification, “Under Section 37(1) of the BMC Act, any objections and/or suggestions in respect to the proposed modification need to be forwarded in writing within 30 days from the date of publication of this notification.” The detailed plans are available for public inspection at the BMC’s local T ward office and at the chief engineer Development Plan’s office within the civic headquarters.

The proposed aviary will be an extension of the Byculla Zoo and will feature multiple thematic zones representing different continents. The layout plan includes zones such as Australia, Africa, and America, each designed to replicate the respective bird habitats and cultural elements. Additionally, the aviary will house up to 22 species of birds, including black swans, toco toucans, and white peafowl.

Beyond the bird exhibits, the aviary will integrate recreational facilities, including a basketball court, jogging track, volleyball court, tennis court, and an open gym, creating a multifaceted space for public engagement.

The BMC’s initiative aligns with a previous approval by the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) for the acquisition of additional bird species. This project aims not only to expand the city’s zoological facilities but also to provide an educational and recreational environment for visitors.
