THANE: The Kasarvadavali flyover on Ghodbunder Road has reopened to traffic after being shut for repairs for about one and a half months, Pudhari reported. The reopening has brought relief to residents of the area and to commuters, who faced heavy traffic jams while the bridge was closed.
A part of the flyover was damaged during Ganeshotsav this year. Potholes had appeared on the deck, the joints connecting the bridge on both sides were damaged, and the structure was felt shaking when vehicles passed. Taking serious note, Thane traffic police closed the flyover from September 13, which brought back the congestion it was meant to ease.
The flyover was built by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) about 14 months ago. Locals have said it was built and opened in a hurry and have blamed poor-quality work for the damage. Even so, the bridge had given motorists some relief on one of Thane’s most congested roads.
So far, only one arm of the flyover, carrying traffic from Thane towards Ghodbunder Road, has been completed. Work on the second arm has not yet started. Meanwhile, Metro work along the corridor is going on at a fast pace, and work to connect the service road with the main road is also under way.
Repairs began after a report on the bridge’s condition was received, and were completed in about six weeks. With the flyover open again, commuters on Ghodbunder Road can expect smoother traffic.
