MUMBAI: Commuters on Central Railway’s Kasara line will get more 15-car local services from November 15. The railway will convert 18 more 12-car services on the route into 15-car services.
The total number of local services will remain the same, but each converted train will carry more passengers. The revised timetable for these services will be announced soon.
Most locals running towards Kasara are 12-car trains. Converting them to 15 cars will allow more commuters to travel on each trip and will help ease crowding during peak hours. A 15-car local can carry about 25 per cent more passengers than a 12-car train.
Central Railway had converted 22 Kasara-line services to 15 cars from August 15, which raised the number of 15-car services on the route from 32 to 54. With 18 more conversions, the number will go up to 72.
A few months ago, the railway also converted some 12-car services on the Karjat, Badlapur and Ambernath routes to 15 cars. It has now planned to expand 15-car services on the Kasara line in phases.
There will be no increase in Central Railway’s total of 1,820 local services. Instead, the railway plans to carry more passengers within the existing services.
