Navi Mumbai: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has intensified its efforts to recover overdue property tax by launching a drum-beating awareness drive at Haware Commercial Complex, Rainbow Business Park. As part of the campaign, officials played drums outside 232 defaulting establishments with a total outstanding tax of ₹1.25 crore, urging them to clear their dues. A public notice listing the names of defaulters and their unpaid amounts was also displayed at the complex.
The action was carried out under the directives of Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Dr. Kailas Shinde and led by Administrative Officer Sanjay Tadvi. Despite repeated notices, many property owners failed to pay their dues, prompting NMMC to take strict measures. Defaulters have been given a deadline to settle their dues by March 31, 2025, failing which their properties will be sealed.
Earlier Actions and Major Recoveries
NMMC has been actively cracking down on tax defaulters across the city. Previously, the civic body sealed 10 establishments at Export Bhavan in Vashi’s APMC Market over ₹56 lakh in unpaid taxes. These properties were de-sealed after defaulters cleared their dues within two days.
The drum-beating method has proven effective in other locations as well. In Turbhe’s Bhoomiraj Society, ₹2.5 crore was recovered, while in Nerul’s Ameya Society, defaulters paid ₹3.5 crore, leading to the de-sealing of their properties.
‘Abhay’ Scheme Offers 50% Penalty Waiver
To encourage taxpayers to clear their dues, NMMC has introduced the ‘Abhay’ scheme, which offers a 50% waiver on penalty charges for overdue property tax. Dr. Kailas Shinde has urged all defaulters to take advantage of this scheme and settle their 2024-25 property tax before March 31, 2025, to avoid further action.
With its firm stance on tax recovery, NMMC ensures better financial discipline and strengthens the city’s revenue system.
