Panvel: In a first-of-its-kind initiative in India, the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has successfully conducted a digital survey of stray dogs and cats using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. The data collected will aid in the vaccination and sterilization of stray animals, contributing to a rabies-free Panvel.
Carried out under the guidance of PMC Commissioner Mangesh Chitale, the AI-powered survey recorded 19,307 stray dogs and 5,080 stray cats within municipal limits. The initiative, executed by Indicare AI Solutions Pvt. Ltd., marks a significant step toward scientific and data-driven animal management.
According to Deputy Commissioner Dr. Vaibhav Vidhate, this digital survey will play a crucial role in controlling the stray animal population and preventing rabies outbreaks. The collected data includes photographs, gender, age, and health status of the animals, allowing authorities to track and monitor them efficiently. In cases of dog bite incidents, this system will help identify the stray dog’s location and history.
Since 2018, PMC has been running a sterilization program, with 44% of stray dogs already neutered. The survey further revealed that Panvel has 10,270 adult stray dogs, approximately 1,800 puppies, and 1,440 senior dogs.
AI in Stray Animal Management: A Game Changer
Medical Health Officer Dr. Anand Gosavi, along with veterinary officers Dr. Bhagwan Gite and Dr. Madhulika Lad, led the survey efforts. Experts believe that AI-driven surveys like this can revolutionize stray animal control programs in other Indian cities as well.
“This AI-powered survey will help us prevent rabies and regulate the stray dog population more effectively,” said Commissioner Mangesh Chitale.
With PMC setting a precedent, other municipalities may soon adopt AI-based solutions for animal welfare and urban management.
