Panvel: The Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) inaugurated its newly constructed international-standard cricket training center in New Panvel last week. Maharashtra’s Information Technology and Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar, who attended the event, expressed confidence that quality players would emerge from the facility under the expert guidance of former India captain Padma Shri Dilip Vengsarkar.
At the event, Shelar praised the PMC’s efforts, saying, “The arrangements at the center are top-notch. The selection of a seasoned personality like Vengsarkar ensures that talented players will be nurtured here and provided with significant opportunities.”
Several dignitaries graced the occasion, including MP Shrirang Barne, MLAs Prashant Thakur, Vikrant Patil, Mahesh Baldi, CIDCO Joint Managing Director Ganesh Deshmukh, PMC Commissioner Mangesh Chitale, and Raigad Cricket Association President Aniruddha Patil.
Highlighting Panvel’s cricketing potential, Vengsarkar said, “There is immense talent in this region. With the right training and exposure through this academy, Panvel’s players will soon be seen representing India.”
MLA Prashant Thakur emphasized that the new center, equipped with world-class amenities, opens up new avenues for young cricketers from Panvel and neighboring areas. Similarly, MLC Vikrant Patil underlined the importance of fostering sports and culture alongside urban development.
Commissioner Mangesh Chitale detailed that the academy has been built over 7.5 acres at a cost of ₹14.55 crore. It includes a 150-meter diameter cricket ground, a pavilion building, and modern facilities. Annually, 101 students aged 10 to 19 will receive free training, with quotas reserved for local and district-level talents.
As part of the event, notable players and coaches from the region were felicitated. Dignitaries also officially launched the academy by worshipping the pitch and playing cricket with the students.
In a special gesture, Vengsarkar interacted with young athletes, signing bats and caps, motivating them to pursue their cricketing dreams.
