Mumbai-Pune Travel to Get Faster! Work on Karjat-Lonavala New Railway Line to Begin Soon

Date:

Travel between Mumbai and Pune is set to become faster, safer, and more convenient. Central Railway has prepared two Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for laying a new double-track railway line between Karjat and Lonavala. These reports have been submitted to the Railway Board for approval.

According to officials, construction work will commence as soon as the DPRs get the green signal. This initiative is part of a larger plan focusing on two key ghat routes: Karjat-Lonavala in the southeast and Kasara-Igatpuri in the northeast, both of which will see the addition of two new railway tracks each.

No More Need for Banker Engines

Thanks to the special design of the new tracks, there will be no steep inclines or descents, eliminating the need for banker engines. This change alone is expected to save 20–25 minutes currently spent attaching and detaching these engines. Additionally, the project is expected to reduce train delays caused by landslides, improving overall efficiency.

The proposed rail project includes subways, bridges, and tunnels, with some tunnels shared by both tracks and others built separately for each line. While the existing route is around 26 kilometers long, the new route will nearly double in length, allowing trains to operate at higher speeds with greater stability.

“This project will be a game-changer for Mumbai-Pune travel,” said Swapnil Nila, CPRO, Central Railway.

Two different proposals with varying technical approaches have been submitted. Construction will follow the design that receives final approval. Once implemented, the new route is expected to significantly benefit daily commuters and long-distance travelers between Mumbai and Pune by reducing travel time and enhancing overall safety.
