The much-anticipated Gopal Krishna Gokhale Bridge, which connects Andheri East and West in Mumbai, is all set to open its final section to the public this Sunday.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has recently completed the remaining work on the bridge, paving the way for its full operation. The reopening is expected to provide major relief to local commuters.
The bridge was closed on November 7, 2022, due to structural concerns. Since then, daily commuters had to endure significant inconvenience, as the bridge serves as a crucial link between Andheri East and West.
The first phase of the reconstruction, covering the west-to-east direction, was inaugurated on February 26, 2024. The second phase involved complex work, including construction in the railway section, ramps at both ends, a connector road to the Barfiwala Flyover, and the concreting and curing of the central portion of the bridge.
Now, all remaining safety and aesthetic components such as crash barriers, sound barriers, railings, painting, signaling systems, cat eyes, light poles, and directional signage have been completed as well.
With the full reopening of the Gokhale Bridge, travel time between Andheri East and West is expected to reduce significantly. It will also ease traffic congestion on alternative routes that had been under pressure during the bridge’s closure.
