Mumbai: The Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway has become increasingly deadly. In the past 18 months, 151 accidents have been reported within the jurisdiction of the Manor Police Station, claiming 65 lives. Despite efforts to reduce accidents, including white-topping the highway, the tragedies continue, causing growing frustration among commuters and drivers.
According to data from the Manor Police Station area on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway, a total of 71 accidents were recorded in 2024, resulting in 31 serious injuries and 23 fatalities. Alarmingly, in just the first eight months of this year (January to August), the number of accidents has already reached 80, with 48 people injured and 42 lives lost. This represents a significant increase compared to last year.
Although white-topping work has been carried out along the 121-kilometer stretch from Achhad to Ghodbander, poor road quality continues to contribute to frequent accidents. Authorities note that with accidents rising daily, urgent improvements to this highway have become essential. Attention is now focused on the National Highway Authority to see what concrete measures it will take to curb this ongoing series of accidents.
Deadly 15-Kilometer Stretch
The Manor-Sativali-Varei-Dhekale-Waghoba Khindi stretch, approximately 15 kilometers long, has witnessed the highest number of accidents. Areas near Mendhanvan, Khindi, and the Wada-Khardkona CNG petrol pump, where dividers were broken to create extra lanes, are increasingly dangerous for drivers. Commuters fear that these modifications, intended to facilitate vehicles moving in the opposite direction, are directly contributing to accidents.
