Relief for Patients with Chronic Illnesses Such as Heart Disease, Diabetes, Psychiatric Disorders and Infections

New Delhi: In a significant move aimed at easing the financial burden on patients, the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has slashed the prices of 35 essential medicines. These include widely used drugs for conditions such as inflammation, heart diseases, infections, diabetes, and psychiatric disorders. The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers issued a notification based on NPPA’s revised price regulations.

The price reduction applies to several widely prescribed Fixed Dose Combinations (FDCs), including Aceclofenac-Paracetamol-Trypsin Chymotrypsin, Amoxicillin with Potassium Clavulanate, Atorvastatin combinations, and newer oral anti-diabetic medications like Empagliflozin, Sitagliptin, and Metformin. For example, a tablet of Aceclofenac-Paracetamol-Trypsin Chymotrypsin marketed by Dr. Reddy’s Labs will now cost ₹13, while the same formulation by Cadila Pharmaceuticals will be priced at ₹15.01.

A vital heart medication combining Atorvastatin 40 mg and Clopidogrel 75 mg will now be available for ₹25.61 per tablet. Additionally, Cefixime-Paracetamol oral suspension for children is also included in the revised list.

To meet Vitamin D needs, Colecalciferol drops have been added to the list, along with Diclofenac injection (priced at ₹31.77 per ml) for pain and inflammation relief.

Strict Compliance Measures for Retailers and Manufacturers

The NPPA has directed all retailers and dealers to clearly display the updated price lists in their stores. Any overcharging beyond the notified prices will invite penalties and recovery with interest under the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013 and the Essential Commodities Act, 1955.

Prices have been fixed excluding GST. Manufacturers are required to upload the updated prices in Form V on the Integrated Pharmaceutical Database Management System and notify both NPPA and the respective state drug controllers. All previous price orders will be deemed invalid following the issuance of this new notification.

The NPPA operates under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers and regulates the prices of essential drugs in India.
