TMC Fined Rs 10.2 Crore for Illegal Waste Dumping in Diva Area

Date:

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has imposed a fine of Rs 10.2 crore on the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) for illegally dumping waste in the Diva region over the past several years. The decision has been hailed as a major victory for public protest by Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Rohidas Munde.

Between 2016 and 2023, waste was allegedly dumped illegally along the creek in Diva, leading to severe damage to the region’s mangroves and biodiversity. The dumping also caused foul odour, leachate contamination, and significant groundwater pollution, severely impacting the health of local residents.

Environmental activist Stalin Dhananjay, founder of the Vanashakti Foundation, along with the people of Diva, led the fight against the illegal dumping. Munde said the action by MPCB proves that sustained public pressure can bring results.
