The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to start dedicated Outpatient Departments (OPDs) for tuberculosis (TB) across its 16 suburban hospitals. As part of this initiative, BMC has also begun the process of recruiting consultant chest physicians to manage these OPDs.
Mumbai has consistently reported an average of 50,000 to 55,000 TB cases annually over the past several years. In 2024 alone, the city recorded 53,638 new TB cases. While the central government aims to eliminate TB by 2025, achieving this target appears to be increasingly challenging. BMC, however, continues to provide free TB testing and treatment in the city.
In an effort to ensure early diagnosis, timely treatment, and expert care for TB patients, BMC is setting up these specialized TB OPDs within its suburban hospitals.
The BMC Commissioner has approved the appointment of part-time specialty medical consultants (chest physicians) for these OPDs. These doctors will be required to work from 12 PM to 5 PM daily. Selected candidates will be offered a monthly remuneration of Rs 60,000, and the appointment will be on a contractual basis for two years.
Eligible applicants must hold an MBBS degree along with an MD/DNB or Diploma in Chest Medicine, along with relevant experience. According to a source from one of the suburban hospitals, each hospital will have one part-time consultant. The presence of chest physicians is expected to reduce the need for TB patients to travel to larger tertiary care hospitals.
