How Navi Mumbai’s New Airport Will Open and Why IndiGo Is Leading the Way

Date:

Navi Mumbai:In a major boost to India’s aviation sector, budget carrier IndiGo, the first airline at NMIA, has signed a strategic agreement with Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL) to launch commercial operations from the soon-to-be-inaugurated Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA).

The milestone collaboration marks the beginning of a new chapter for air travel in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, with NMIA poised to become India’s newest international gateway.

IndiGo plans to begin operations with 18 daily flights connecting more than 15 Indian cities, and scale up to 79 daily departures by November 2025, including 14 international services. By March 2026, the airline aims to operate over 100 daily flights, expanding to 140 by November 2026, with 30 of those being international.

“We are proud to be the launch airline at NMIA, which aligns perfectly with our growth strategy,” said Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo. “This move strengthens our position in Western India and supports our mission to offer affordable, on-time, and hassle-free travel to millions of customers.”

Adani Airport Holdings, the developer and operator of NMIA, highlighted the strategic value of the partnership. “IndiGo’s decision to start operations from NMIA is a strong endorsement of our vision,” said Arun Bansal, CEO of AAHL. “Together, we aim to develop Navi Mumbai into a key hub for domestic and international air traffic.”

A Next-Generation Airport

Built as a joint venture between Adani Group and CIDCO, the Navi Mumbai International Airport spans over 1,160 hectares and is designed to handle up to 90 million passengers annually once fully developed. The first phase will support 20 million passengers and half a million metric tonnes of cargo per year.

Featuring two parallel runways, a world-class terminal, and cutting-edge logistics facilities, the Navi Mumbai International Airport’s (NMIA) design draws inspiration from the lotus flower and integrates sustainability through green infrastructure and renewable energy sources. IndiGo, the first airline at NMIA, is set to begin commercial operations, marking a significant milestone in the airport’s launch.

With the launch of operations nearing, NMIA is set to relieve congestion at Mumbai’s existing airport and significantly enhance regional connectivity, bolstering Maharashtra’s economic and logistical strength.
