In a major relief for commuters in South Mumbai, the Carnac Railway Flyover, which connects Masjid Bunder Railway Station with P. D’Mello Road, is set to open for traffic by June 10, 2025. The flyover, an essential infrastructure for easing traffic in the area, is being reconstructed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) following safety concerns about the existing bridge.
Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Mr. Abhijit Bangar emphasized the importance of completing the work within the next 53 days, making it clear that no delays would be tolerated. In a stern warning to contractors and local officials, Mr. Bangar stressed the need for meticulous planning to ensure the project’s timely completion.
On April 18, 2025, Mr. Bangar visited the project site and reviewed the progress of the construction, issuing further instructions for the ongoing work. The flyover’s eastern side, which requires faster work, will see the completion of 8 pillars, with 5 of 40 iron girders already delivered to the site.
The project is on track, with specific milestones set: the arrival of all iron girders by April 27, installation completed by May 2, and the approach roads ready by June 5. The concrete work for the railway section is expected to be finished by May 7. With these deadlines in place, the bridge’s main traffic route should be fully functional by June 10, 2025.
Municipal officials are also tasked with ensuring the timely delivery of the iron girders from Daman’s fabrication plant. Senior engineers from the BMC’s bridge department will be closely monitoring the site to ensure the project maintains both quality and schedule.
This flyover will be a significant improvement for South Mumbai’s traffic, easing congestion around the bustling Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Mohammad Ali Road areas.
