Why Mumbai Water Tanker Association Had to Call off Strike

Date:

In a major relief to residents of Mumbai amid scorching heat, the Mumbai Water Tanker Association called off its strike following a constructive meeting with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani. The meeting, held on April 14, 2025, saw both parties engage in constructive discussions to resolve the ongoing issues concerning private water supply tankers, wells, and borewells in Mumbai.

The strike, which had disrupted the water supply in the city, was called off after BMC decided to temporarily suspend notices issued under the Disaster Management Act of 2005. The suspension, which lasts until June 15, 2025, effectively halts the acquisition of private water supply tankers and wells. During the meeting, Gagrani assured the tanker drivers that the BMC would provide administrative support in forwarding their demands to the central government and the Central Groundwater Authority.

The tanker drivers had earlier voiced concerns regarding the BMC’s move to acquire private water supply tankers and wells, requesting the central government’s intervention on the matter. Following the meeting, the BMC committed to assisting the union in addressing their concerns with the appropriate authorities, though technical issues remain under the jurisdiction of the central government.

Gagrani stressed that while the BMC was taking a cooperative approach, it was important for the union to consider the situation carefully and resolve the issues in a balanced manner. After the discussions, the union confirmed that they would be holding an internal meeting to finalize their stance, which would be shared as a positive outcome.
