‘No Liquor Zone’ Campaign in Kharghar Enters Aggressive Phase

Date:

Kharghar: The long-standing demand to declare Kharghar a ‘liquor-free zone’ has gained fresh momentum, following the controversial approval of a new liquor license in the city. In a show of solidarity, former MLA and Peasants and Workers Party of India (PWPI) leader Balaram Patil and former MHADA Chairman and senior BJP leader Balasaheb Patil attended a meeting organized by the Sangharsh Samiti last week to express their support for the ongoing campaign.

For over two decades, the No Liquor Zone Kharghar movement, spearheaded by the Sangharsh Samiti, has actively fought to keep the area alcohol-free. Marches, protests, and public outreach campaigns have marked this citizen-led movement. However, the recent approval of a bar license has triggered renewed public anger and sparked fresh calls to intensify the agitation.

During the recent state assembly session, BJP MLA Vikrant Patil also raised the issue, requesting the Maharashtra government to officially declare Kharghar a liquor-free zone, in line with the overwhelming sentiment of local residents.

Public Outrage Over New Bar Licenses

Residents have expressed growing frustration with the State Excise Department, which they accuse of ignoring public sentiment. Originally, the liquor ban in Kharghar was imposed by the local gram panchayat, leading to elections that centered around the issue. However, after a re-election, the ban was lifted, despite widespread resistance.

For nearly 15 years, the city saw no new licenses for liquor establishments. But in the past two years, at least two new bars have received approval, with fears now mounting that more licenses may follow.

The Sangharsh Samiti has announced plans to escalate the movement, including protests and legal options, to ensure the voices of Kharghar’s citizens are heard and respected.
