The Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s metro network is set for a major expansion. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced plans to begin work on four new metro corridors in the coming year. Budgetary provisions have already been made for these projects, aimed at improving connectivity in Thane, Vasai-Virar, and Navi Mumbai.
Out of the total Rs 40,187.41 crore budget, MMRDA has allocated Rs 35,151.14 crore — nearly 87% — for key infrastructure projects, including metro expansion, tunnels, and coastal roads.

Work to Begin on New Metro Routes
MMRDA will focus on both accelerating ongoing metro work and initiating new corridors. Major projects include:
- Metro Line 14: 38 km corridor with 15 stations, estimated cost ₹18,000 crore. Environmental clearance process underway.
- Metro Line 5 Extension: Current Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan line will be extended from Kalyan to Durgadi and Ulhasnagar.
- Metro Line 13: Shivaji Chowk (Mira Road) to Virar.
- Metro Line 10: Gaimukh to Shivaji Chowk (Mira Road).
Additionally, Metro Line 9, connecting Dahisar to Kashigaon, is expected to be operational this year, with full route completion next year. A section of Metro Line 2B, connecting Mankhurd to Chembur Naka, may also open for public use this year.
Upcoming Road and Tunnel Projects:
MMRDA has also proposed several major road and tunnel works to improve regional road connectivity:
- Construction of an underground road from Gaimukh to Fountain Junction on Ghodbunder Road, Thane.
- Elevated road from Fountain Hotel Junction to Bhayandar.
- Airoli Tunnel to Katai Naka Road (Phase 3), covering 6.71 km.
Infrastructure Work in Kulgaon-Badlapur
- Construction of a Road Over Bridge (ROB) between Katrap and Belavali, Badlapur.
- Development of a concrete road from Katrap Petrol Pump to Kharvai Juveli.
Vasai-Virar Ring Road Project
Development of major roads, bridges over creeks, and railway flyovers in the Vasai-Virar region. A 40-meter-wide ring road will connect four key cities and surrounding villages in this area. Construction of five railway overbridges within the Vasai-Virar city limits is also planned. This will make cross-city travel easier and minimize delays caused by closed railway gates.
Recognizing the growing population and daily commuter traffic from neighboring areas to Mumbai, MMRDA’s budget prioritizes enhancing connectivity and to facilitate smoother and faster movement for commuters across the region.
