NMMC’s Bold Step: No Potable Water for Construction, Only Recycled Water

Date:

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has taken a major step to conserve water and directed all developers and builders to use treated water for construction istead of potable water. A special meeting was organized under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde to encourage the use of tertiary treated water in construction and industrial sectors instead of potable water.

A large number of builders, architects, and civil contractors from the Navi Mumbai region participated in the meeting and expressed their full support for the municipal corporation’s policy.

During the meeting, Assistant Director of Town Planning Mr. Somnath Kekaan highlighted that using tertiary treated water in construction and industries would help conserve potable water and further establish Navi Mumbai as a leading city in water management.

Additional City Engineer Mr. Arvind Shinde provided a detailed explanation of the municipal water supply system and the use of treated water from advanced sewage treatment plants. Navi Mumbai has seven modern sewage treatment plants, where wastewater is purified and repurposed for gardening, landscaping, and non-potable uses in residential societies. The tertiary treatment plants in Kopar Khairane and Airoli, each with a capacity of 20 MLD (Million Liters per Day), supply treated water to 55 industries in the MIDC (Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation) area. Additionally, 11 RMC (Ready-Mix Concrete) plants in the MIDC zone also receive this water under an agreement with MIDC, with ongoing efforts to expand this usage.

Currently, numerous redevelopment projects and private land developments are underway in the NMMC region, along with major infrastructure projects led by the engineering department. These projects consume large amounts of potable water. Given the declining rainfall patterns, future water shortages are a possibility. To address this, the use of secondary and tertiary treated water can significantly reduce the consumption of potable water.

Considering this, Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde issued a circular on February 12, 2025, encouraging the use of tertiary treated water for construction activities.

In response, the participants of this special meeting—builders, architects, and civil contractors—were urged to adopt tertiary treated water as a social responsibility. They all responded positively, expressing their commitment to supporting this sustainable initiative.
