The Mumbai-Pune Expressway has installed an advanced Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), represents a major advancement in traffic enforcement and road safety. As part of this upgrade, 52 AI-powered cameras equipped with cutting-edge radar technology have been strategically installed at 52 selected locations on both sides of this expressway.
These cameras monitor various traffic violations, including speed of vehicles, mobile phone usage, failing to wear seat belts, and improper lane discipline. Speed limits have been carefully defined for different terrains: in mountainous ghat sections, light motor vehicles are restricted at 60 km/h, while heavier vehicles are limited to 40 km/h. On standard routes, cars can reach speeds of up to 100 km/h, and other vehicles up to 80 km/h.
The Pimpri-Chinchwad Regional Transport Office has announced plans to enhance the system further with automatic number plate recognition at cameras and toll booths. This will enable the seamless issuance of electronic challans for violators.
Rahul Jadhav, the Deputy Regional Transport Officer, has urged drivers to comply with traffic rules, emphasizing that any violations will be promptly detected by the AI cameras, triggering immediate action against the driver and passengers.
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway handles substantial traffic daily—around 40,000 vehicles on weekdays and up to 60,000 on weekends. This technological intervention aims to manage the heavy traffic flow efficiently while reducing accidents and ensuring safer journeys for all commuters.
