India Launches Special 100-Day TB Elimination Campaign Focused on High Burden Districts

In a major push to eliminate tuberculosis (TB), Prime Minister Narendra Modi today announced the launch of a special 100-day campaign targeting high burden TB districts across India. The initiative aims to accelerate efforts to reduce TB incidence, improve detection, and enhance treatment outcomes in the most affected regions of the country.

“Our fight against TB just got stronger! Powered by a collective spirit to defeat TB, a special 100-day campaign is starting today, with a focus on high-burden TB districts,” Prime Minister Modi stated on social media. The campaign is part of India’s broader strategy to eliminate TB and move towards a TB-free nation.

In his post, Modi emphasized that the fight against TB in India is multi-pronged. This includes providing enhanced support to patients, increasing community participation through Jan Bhagidari, introducing newer and more effective drugs, leveraging technology for better diagnostics, and utilizing faster treatment protocols.

“Let us all come together and do our bit to eliminate TB,” Modi urged citizens in his message. The Prime Minister also highlighted the success of initiatives such as Nikshay Mitras, a program where citizens volunteer to support TB patients, and shorter, more effective treatments that have significantly improved recovery rates and reduced TB incidence.

Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda also shared his thoughts on the progress India has made under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi in the fight against TB. “Under the Prime Minister’s leadership, India is making remarkable progress. Initiatives like the 100-day campaign, enhanced nutritional support through Nikshay Poshan Yojana, and faster, cost-effective diagnostic tools are accelerating the country’s efforts to eliminate TB,” Nadda stated on social media.

Nadda further noted that India’s innovative approach to TB elimination has set global benchmarks, pushing the country closer to a TB-free India. He praised the collective efforts of the government and communities, emphasizing the critical role of Jan Bhagidari in ensuring timely diagnosis and treatment.

India has made significant progress in reducing TB incidence and related deaths in recent years. According to Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel, the TB incidence rate has decreased by 17.7%, from 237 per 100,000 population in 2015 to 195 per 100,000 population in 2023. Additionally, TB-related deaths have decreased by 21.4% over the same period. The notification of TB cases has also seen a steady increase, from 18.05 lakh in 2020 to 25.52 lakh in 2023.
