DOMBIVLI: For 28 years, nobody was behind bars for the death of Shailesh More, whose body was left on the railway tracks near Kopar in 1998. That has now changed. A team from the Dombivli Government Railway Police (GRP) has tracked down the main accused, Sandeep Krishnan, in Patna, where he had been living and working as a marketing manager.

Krishnan is accused of killing More, his sister’s former husband, with the help of two others. Both of them, Vinod Yadav from Bihar and Vinesh Krishnan from Kerala, are yet to be found.

A murder made to look like a train accident

More’s body was found on the tracks between Dombivli and Kopar stations on December 14, 1998. At first, it looked like one more death on the railway line. The post-mortem, however, pointed to murder.

The two families lived in the same locality in Dombivli. Police said the trouble began when More divorced Krishnan’s sister. Krishnan, Vinod and Vinesh allegedly invited More to a party, where the quarrel over the divorce turned violent. He was strangled and crushed with a stone. The three then placed the body on the tracks so the death would pass off as an accident, and left the city.

How the police found him

Investigators visited More’s neighbourhood several times over the years and kept looking for the three men, who had gone back to their home states. The breakthrough came through technical analysis and mobile phone location.

“Recently we came to know that Krishnan was staying in Patna and working with a company as a marketing manager. We traced him through his mobile location, and our three-member team arrested him there with the help of the Bihar police,” said Babasaheb Thorat, senior police inspector, Dombivli GRP.

Hunt on for two others

Krishnan was brought to Mumbai on transit remand and produced before the Kalyan court, which sent him to police custody. The GRP is now trying to trace Vinod Yadav and Vinesh Krishnan.
