Shiv Sena (Shinde) workers staged an unusual protest at the Kalyan Circle-1 office of the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDCL) on Friday. They switched off the power in the officers’ office for about an hour and lit candles inside, protesting the repeated power cuts in the Shree Malanggad area of Kalyan rural.

The protest was led by corporator Mahesh Gaikwad and party office-bearer Chainu Jadhav. Party workers and local residents marched to the MSEDCL office, carrying placards and the party’s saffron flags and shouting slogans against the power utility. The protesters said that if residents have to live in the dark, officials should feel what that is like too.

Residents struggle with unpredictable outages

Residents say power in the Malanggad belt has been going off again and again for many days, with no warning of when it will go or when it will return. Students say their studies have been disrupted. Farmers say their farm work has been held up. Shopkeepers and other residents say their daily routines have been thrown off.

The protesters said they had complained to MSEDCL many times and followed up, but nothing concrete was done.

Seven-day ultimatum

The Sena delegation demanded that steady power be restored in the Shree Malanggad area at once, and that MSEDCL take permanent steps to stop the outages in Kalyan rural and Kalyan East. The party gave the power utility seven days to fix the problem. It warned that if nothing improves, it will launch a tougher agitation “in Shiv Sena style.”
