Panvel: Twelve-year-old Tanay Tushar Lad, a resident of Panvel currently living in Kamothe, has set a new record by swimming from the Gateway of India to Atal Setu (17 km) in just 2 hours and 26 minutes, earning the title of the fastest swimmer for this distance. In recognition of his extraordinary achievement, he was felicitated by Commissioner Mangesh Chitale at the municipal headquarters today.
Tanay’s remarkable feat was made possible with the guidance of his parents as well as his coaches. He has been training under swimmers and mentors Rupali Repale and Aniruddha Mahadik in Palava. His achievement has been met with an outpouring of congratulations, creating a celebratory atmosphere among his family, coaches, friends, teachers, and schoolmates.
On March 2, 2025, at 8:46 AM, Tanay dived into the Arabian Sea from the Gateway of India, battling strong tides, waves, and challenging weather conditions. He completed his rigorous swim at 11:14 AM upon reaching the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sea Bridge, setting a new record. His achievement has made him an inspiring figure in the swimming world.

Tanay is currently studying in Grade 6 at New Horizon Public School, Panvel. Previously, in 2024, he won a bronze medal in the Ocean Man competition in Thailand and a silver medal in competitions held at Sankrock to Gateway, Periyar (Kochi, Kerala), Vijaydurg, and Rankala (Kolhapur). He also participated in competitions in Malvan and Porbandar, showcasing his exceptional swimming talent. Open-water swimming is an extremely challenging and daring sport, requiring immense physical endurance and mental toughness.
Swimming in the open sea presents unpredictable weather conditions and marine challenges, demanding unwavering determination from every competitor. Tanay overcame these obstacles through years of rigorous training since the age of six, mental preparation, and relentless practice. His daily commute from Panvel to Palava-Dombivli for training, along with his unwavering confidence, played a crucial role in his success. His skill, dedication, and perseverance serve as an inspiring example for aspiring swimmers.
