Nerul: In line with the Government of Maharashtra’s efforts to promote environmental conservation, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has launched a special cleanliness drive to safeguard the city’s natural resources. The initiative, spearheaded by Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde, kicked off on April 22, World Earth Day, with a comprehensive cleaning operation at Diwale Creek.
The special cleanliness drive continued today, April 23, with a focused effort in the Belapur division. Additional Commissioner Mr. Sunil Pawar oversaw the initiative, which saw participation from NMMC officers, staff, sanitation workers, and students from the Indian Maritime Institute. Volunteers gathered to clean up the T.S. Chanakya creek and surrounding mangrove areas, collecting waste materials such as plastic, thermocol, and paper.
Residents also joined the campaign, demonstrating strong community support for preserving the environment. Following the cleanliness drive, a collective pledge under the “My Earth” campaign was taken by all attendees, led by Dr. Ajay Gadade, Deputy Commissioner of the Solid Waste Management Division 1, along with various NMMC officials.
This year’s Maharashtra Day celebrations will be marked with a focus on pollution-free activities. The theme for events organized on World Earth Day is “Save the Environment – Beautify the Earth.” As part of this effort, NMMC has planned several community-driven initiatives, emphasizing public involvement in environmental protection. Furthermore, activities focused on environmental conservation are also being conducted at the school level to instill the importance of sustainability in young minds.
Dr. Kailas Shinde, Municipal Commissioner of NMMC, has urged all Navi Mumbai citizens to actively participate in these events and demonstrate their commitment to a cleaner, greener environment.
