Why Belapur Flooded on First Rain, Know Here

Date:

Navi Mumbai: Following intense rainfall and a 5.17-meter high tide on May 25 and 26, several areas of CBD Belapur—particularly Sectors 4, 5, 6, and 11—were left severely waterlogged, prompting immediate action from the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC).

Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde held an emergency meeting with senior civic officials and instructed all departments to step up monsoon preparedness. Field inspections have been mandated, and construction activities across the city have been temporarily halted to prevent further inconvenience to citizens.

“All dug-up areas must be restored immediately, and proper barricading and signage must be installed at construction sites,” said a senior official.

To tackle the aftermath of the downpour, the Commissioner has directed that silt removed from drains be cleared without delay. The Garden and Solid Waste Management departments have been asked to ensure quick removal of green waste from tree pruning, and to respond rapidly to tree falls caused by high winds.

Sanitation efforts have been intensified, especially in village pockets and LIG (Lower Income Group) areas. Raincoats and gumboots have been provided to sanitation workers through contractors to maintain hygiene standards during the monsoon.

Amid growing health concerns, the civic body is on alert for waterborne and seasonal diseases, including COVID-19. Dr. Shinde has asked the health department to launch preventive measures on a war footing and ensure sufficient medicine stock. A city-wide awareness campaign has also been launched to educate residents about health and safety during the rains.

In a bid to improve coordination, NMMC will now centralize responsibilities for road, footpath, and median maintenance under a single department. Daily updates from all civic departments will be compiled through the Emergency Management Department using a centralized tracking system.

“Quick redressal of public complaints must remain our top priority,” Commissioner Shinde emphasized, urging citizens to reach out via the NMMC’s Central Disaster Control Room at 022-27567060 / 27567061 or the toll-free helplines 1800-222-309 / 1800-222-310.
