In a significant shift in recruitment trends, at least four older Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have reported a decline in campus placement rates in recent years. Surveys indicate that the number of students securing jobs independently is rising. This trend comes against the backdrop of evolving technology landscapes, global uncertainties, and an increasingly competitive job market, with a growing number of IIT graduates vying for limited opportunities.
At IIT Delhi, only 61% of registered students secured jobs in the ongoing 2024-25 placement season. Out of 1,885 registered students, just 1,147 were placed by December 31, 2024, leaving 738 students without jobs. Additionally, the annual average package offered to students in November 2024 stood at ₹4 lakh per annum — significantly lower than previous years.
Average Package in Previous Year Stood at Rs 19.10 Lakh

According to information obtained via an RTI filed by IIT Kanpur alumnus and founder of the Global IIT Alumni Support Group, Dheeraj Singh, 1,936 students registered for placements in the 2023-24 season, but only 1,222 students secured jobs, leaving 36% of students without jobs. The placement cycle ended in June 2024, and the numbers include pre-placement offers (PPOs), job offers extended to students before the official placement season begins.
IIT Delhi did not disclose the average package offered to students in the 2024-25 season but revealed that the figure stood at Rs 19.10 lakh per annum in the previous season.
30% IIT Students Unemployed in Last 4 Years
The placement trend at IIT Delhi is concerning, with 30% of students who participated in campus placements remaining unemployed in the past four years. The number of unemployed students rose from 350 in 2022 to over 700 in the current placement season. Authorities are urged to expand efforts to secure jobs for affected students studying at the country’s premier institutions.
In December 2024, Delhi stated that more than 1,200 job offers including PPOs, were extended to students, with around 1,150 individual students receiving offers.
