A tragic incident took place in Mumbai which shows the deadly struggle of a lot of people in the city of dreams. A 50-year-old man took a life of his old mother before attempting suicide due to financial stress.
A man named Balasubramaniam Kripaswamy reportedly visited his 72-year-old mother on October 26 and suffocated her with a pillow. Following that he attempted to end his life by cutting his wrist. His neighbors noticed and stopped him from attempting suicide. The Police arrived sooner and rushed him to Wockhardt Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
A suicide note was found in the house which was written by Kripaswamy and he expressed his deep despair over his financial struggles, including unmanageable debts and unpaid EMIs. He wrote, “I have no work, and I am completely in debt. I cannot pay the EMI of the loan, so I am ending my mother’s and my life.”
Police have tried speaking with his wife and daughter but the family is too devastated to answer the police. Authorities have filed a case against Kripaswamy under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) and they are also doing further investigation.
Mumbai which is often hailed as the “city of dreams,” is also a place where many struggle silently with financial insecurity. It’s a deadly poison with the high cost of housing, daily expenses, skyrocketing living costs, and the pressure to maintain a certain standard of living compared to being “fitted” in society. It can weigh heavily, particularly on those with limited income and the people with a dream or passion to achieve among this huge population.
Most of the youngsters come to Mumbai with an aim or dream to fulfill but end up with depression, insecurity, anxiety, stress, financial burden, comparison with other’s lives, and trying to fit in the society, and in the end, they lose track in what they wanted to be. Most of the people in Mumbai just working like robots to fulfil their financial needs without any happiness or work satisfaction.
This is not just Kripaswamy’s struggle. Most Mumbai people, from youngsters to family men, are struggling financially. Mumbai’s living costs and population are relatively high compared to any other city in India. This heart-wrenching incident sheds light on the intense financial pressure faced by many in Mumbai. It leaves a bold statement that Mumbai is not just a city of dreams but also known for its soaring living costs and competitive lifestyle.
