This eye-opening investigation should serve as a warning sign: if immediate action isn’t taken, the safety of countless passengers and pedestrians could be in jeopardy
In a stunning and alarming turn of events, an eye check-up camp organized by the Thane Transport Department has exposed a major oversight in the health of its bus drivers. A shocking 30 drivers from the Anand Nagar Bus Depot have been found suffering from serious vision defects, with an alarming 8 of them diagnosed with cataracts!
This revelation comes in the wake of the tragic BEST bus accident in Kurla, highlighting the glaring and disturbing negligence of the Thane Municipal Transport Department (TMT). Despite the gravity of such accidents, the administration has failed to address this crucial issue, putting countless lives at risk.
Eye-Opening Neglect: Drivers Ignoring Their Health
Eyesight is critical for drivers, yet many of the TMT bus operators have turned a blind eye to their own deteriorating vision. The eye check-up camp, organized by The Thane Regional Trasport Authority as part of the ongoing Road Safety Week, aimed to tackle this very issue.
“These drivers are operating heavy vehicles every day without realizing the serious risk they’re posing to themselves and the public. Their condition could have resulted in a catastrophic accident.”
Dr. Sheetal Dhay, Fortis Hospital
Free Eyewear Distribution – But Is It Enough?
In an attempt to mitigate the damage, the drivers were provided with free corrective eyewear. But is it enough to fix a systemic issue where public safety is being jeopardized by the health neglect of those entrusted with operating the city’s buses?
The camp was a collaboration between the Thane Regional Transport Department and Fortis Hospital, under the guidance of Regional Transport Officer Hemangini Patil. Yet, even with such efforts, the stark reality of the situation is far too alarming to ignore.
A Wake-Up Call for TMT?
The shocking findings raise critical questions about the level of care and responsibility shown by Thane’s transport department. How many more drivers are out there with unaddressed health problems? How long will it take for the administration to finally wake up and implement serious health checks to ensure the safety of all?
