A recent pattern has emerged from the Ahmedabad Family Court regarding matrimonial disputes and divorce cases. Data reveals that a significant number of divorce cases are being filed by couples aged between 40 and 50, indicating a rising trend of mid-life separations. In fact, over 65% of the ongoing cases fall within this age group.
Another notable trend is that highly educated individuals are more frequently seeking legal separation. Out of the 1.28 lakh (128,000) cases currently pending in Ahmedabad Family Court, more than 83,000 involve well-educated couples.
Educated Professionals Dominating Divorce Filings
The data shows that individuals from respected and established professions like businessmen, doctors, and engineers are filing for divorce in significant numbers—around 1,200 cases involve such professionals. Some petitioners reportedly hold three to four academic degrees. Architects, interior designers, and even those who have studied abroad are also among the applicants.
‘Grey Divorce’ on the Rise

A growing trend of “grey divorces” has also been identified. These cases involve couples aged 60 or older who are seeking separation in their retirement years, hoping to spend the rest of their lives in peace. Around 25,600 cases—constituting about 20% of the total—fall under this category in Ahmedabad Family Court.
Common Complaints: Infidelity and Irresponsibility
Women complain that their husbands are inattentive, often distracted by their phones after work, and fail to give time to the family. They also express dissatisfaction with their husbands’ irresponsible behavior and lack of involvement compared to their in-laws.
On the other hand, men frequently cite complaints about their wives being excessively spendthrift. Many also raise concerns about their wives’ character, which appears to be a common reason stated in their applications.
The data paints a telling picture of shifting marital dynamics in urban India, especially among the educated and aging population.
