In July 2024, a 12-year-old girl was rescued from a forced child marriage in Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh, Harmony Foundation, in collaboration with local law enforcement orchestrated a crucial rescue operation.
The girl, who had lost her father a few years’ prior and was previously studying in Kurla (East), Mumbai, had relocated to Andhra Pradesh following her mother’s remarriage. Her mother along with her stepfather were trying to wash their hands off her by getting her married.

Dr Abraham Mathai Founder-Chairman of Harmony Foundation through reliable sources, discovered that the child was forced into getting married and the wedding card with the date scheduled for July 16th, 2024, confirmed it.
Upon learning of the impending marriage, Harmony Foundation acted promptly, obtaining her Aadhaar card from her former school to confirm her age and coordinating with the Superintendent of Police in Kurnool to halt the illegal ceremony.
Now, nearly a year later, the young girl has returned to Mumbai to continue her education. Harmony Foundation is truly delighted to see her back and is committed to supporting her future endeavours.
Dr Abraham Mathai, also former Vice-Chairman of the State Minorities Commission, expressed his joy at her return, stating, “Her resilience is inspiring, and we are dedicated to providing her with the support she needs to build a bright future.”
Dr Mathai concluded saying “this case underscores the critical importance of vigilance and swift action in protecting vulnerable children from harmful practices like child marriage.” He further stated “we remain steadfast in its mission to safeguard the girl child rights and ensure that every girl child has the opportunity to grow, learn, and thrive in a safe environment.”
