On World Organ Donation Day, AHNM honours the gift of life with over 660 successful transplants.
Navi Mumbai: In the quiet moments after loss, a single decision can ignite hope for many. On World Organ Donation Day, Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai (AHNM) celebrates the courage of donors, the resilience of recipients, and the life-changing impact of organ transplantation — a journey where science, skill, and humanity converge. As one of Western India’s foremost centres for transplant medicine, AHNM has built an unmatched reputation for saving lives through precision-driven surgeries and comprehensive patient care.
Since 2017, the hospital has performed 408 kidney transplants, 229 liver transplants, 11 heart transplants, and 13 cornea transplants, each representing a second chance at life made possible by extraordinary teamwork and unwavering dedication.
Interestingly, demographic trends reveal that women are more likely to come forward as living donors, especially for kidney and liver transplants. This quiet yet powerful act of giving often stems from a deep sense of empathy and familial responsibility — a testament to the pivotal role women play in the lives of their families and the communities. In its resolute commitment to spreading awareness and inspiring action, AHNM is driving the “One Yes to Eight Lives” pledge through a blend of heartfelt community engagement and wide-reaching campaigns.
While India has made significant strides in organ transplantation in the past decade, the increasing gap between demand and availability remains a pressing challenge. According to the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), thousands of patients remain on waiting lists each year, with ever increasing demands of liver, kidney, and heart transplants in especially with the poor rates of organ donations. Maharashtra continues to be one of the leading states in organ donation, thanks to active government led programmes, hospital-led initiatives, and growing public awareness.
Women Leading the Gift of Life
On the ground, offline initiatives such as mall-based awareness drives and free organ screening camps bring the conversation into everyday spaces, making it easier for people to pledge. Online, a robust social media campaign aims to reach and engage over five lakh Navi Mumbaikars, sparking dialogue and dispelling myths about organ donation. On 8th August, AHNM brought together donors, recipients, families, and care teams for a patient support meet and a felicitation ceremony honouring the selflessness of organ donors — moments filled with gratitude, shared tears, and renewed hope.
Dr. Amey Sonavane, Senior Consultant– Hepatology & Liver Transplant, Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai, reflected on the profound significance of this work,“Every transplant is far more than a medical milestone — it’s a story of human connection. Behind every surgery is a family that said ‘yes’ in their darkest hour, choosing to turn grief into a gift of life. That ‘yes’ becomes a lifeline for someone battling the final stages of organ failure. The trust patients place in us is sacred, and at Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai, we honour that trust with meticulous surgical precision, advanced post-operative care, and a lifelong commitment to our recipients. Our role does not end in the operating theatre — it extends into ensuring that each recipient can live fully, return to their families, and reclaim the moments that illness had stolen.”
Dr. Amit Langote, Sr Consultant Nephrology, Kidney Transplant Physician & Hypertension Specialist, Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai, emphasised,“One organ donor can save up to eight lives — and in each of those lives, the ripple effect extends to families, friends, and entire communities. Kidney failure not only impacts health but also disrupts livelihoods and emotional well-being. A transplant restores more than organ function — it restores hope, independence, and dignity. At Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai, we have built a programme that addresses every aspect of this journey — from pre-transplant evaluation to long-term rehabilitation — because success is not just survival, it is quality of life. And that’s the benchmark we strive for in every case.”
Dr. Amolkumar Patil, Sr. Consultant, Urology, Uro-Oncology, Kidney Transplant & Robotic Surgery, Clinical Lead –Maharashtra Region (Urology, Kidney Transplant), Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai, shared,“Kidney transplantation is not merely a surgical procedure — it is the beginning of a new chapter for patients who have battled years of dialysis, physical limitations, and uncertainty. Each successful transplant at Apollo is the result of advanced technology, highly skilled surgical expertise, and a comprehensive care framework that ensures long-term graft survival. The satisfaction of seeing a patient walk out of the hospital with a renewed sense of life is unparalleled.”
