Now, Work from Railway Stations! Mumbai Central to Get Its First Co-Working Space

Date:

Soon, you’ll be able to work right from the railway station! Western Railway has awarded a contract to set up the first-ever co-working space at Mumbai Central station, marking a major step towards transforming stations into city hubs.

While Navi Mumbai already has co-working spaces near stations, those are built on land owned by local bodies like CIDCO. This is the first time Indian Railways is using its own premises for such a facility.

“This concept aligns with the vision of making stations city centres. Being in prime locations, stations are ideal for digital lounges that reflect the spirit of Digital India,” said a Western Railway spokesperson.

The upcoming lounge will span 1,500 sq ft in the station’s concourse area. It will offer:

  • Conference/meeting rooms
  • High-speed internet
  • Charging points for laptops & mobiles
  • Printing & scanning facilities
  • Comfortable table seating
  • Light refreshments, tea & coffee
  • Spaces for professional and social events

Expected to be ready in 2–3 months, the lounge will be accessible on an hourly basis at a reasonable fee, catering especially to travelling professionals.

The Maharashtra government will match this amount, taking the total to Rs 3,554 crore. Of this, Rs 100 crore will go towards MUTP Phase II, Rs 800 crore towards Phase III and Rs 877 crore to Phase IIIA.

“This strong financial support will accelerate key projects including new corridors, station upgrades, and improved rail infrastructure,” said Vilas Wadekar, CMD of Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC). “We’re bringing Mumbai commuters closer to a faster, safer, and more efficient suburban rail network.”
