No More Misleading Consumers with Fake Paneer: FSSAI Gets Tough

Date:

Analog paneer (non-dairy product) has sparked widespread discussion lately. In response, two central government ministries have already issued necessary guidelines. Now, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), under the Union Ministry of Health, has stepped in with stricter measures.

FSSAI has prepared a consultation paper addressing issues related to “dairy analogues” like analog paneer and analog cream. This document, uploaded on its official website, includes several suggestions and seeks public feedback on key questions. For instance, should terms like “non-dairy” or “analog” be mandatory before the word “dairy”? Can there be a better term than “analog”?

The primary aim is to ensure consumers are clearly informed about whether the product they are buying is a real dairy item or a plant-based alternative. Among the most significant proposals, FSSAI has recommended a ban on the sale of analog paneer or cream in loose form. It also suggests that such products should not be sold in packaging less than 500 grams.

To step up enforcement, FSSAI has instructed state authorities to take strict action against adulterated paneer and to monitor the production and sale of imitation dairy items. A list of authorized testing laboratories has also been issued to support consistent quality checks across the country.

Additionally, the FSSAI has warned food businesses against reusing cooking oil, stating that violations will invite stringent penalties.

Officials have been directed to increase surveillance, conduct random food sampling, and run awareness campaigns to protect consumer health and uphold national food safety standards.
