Navi Mumbai: The Morbe Dam, owned by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) and located in Khalapur, Raigad, has adequate water reserves to meet the city’s demand until September 2, 2025, according to civic officials.
The dam’s current water level is higher than in the past two years, with over 60% of its capacity filled, ensuring uninterrupted supply until the end of August. In contrast, reservoirs supplying Mumbai are at nearly half their capacity as temperatures continue to rise in both Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.
Despite the comfortable water levels, NMMC has urged citizens to use water cautiously. The civic body noted that over 450 million liters are being drawn daily—a high extraction rate compared to the city’s needs. Officials stress the importance of regulating consumption, suggesting a 200-liter-per-person daily limit to ensure sustainable usage.
Water Conservation Measures
On August 28, 2024, Morbe Dam reached 100% capacity, prompting NMMC to release excess water. To mark the occasion, a water consecration ceremony was held, attended by municipal officials and dignitaries.
Navi Mumbai remains the only municipal corporation in India, apart from Mumbai, to own its dam. The good rainfall in the dam’s catchment area this year played a key role in replenishing reserves. NMMC officials are now focusing on optimizing the use of treated water for gardens and other non-drinking purposes to ensure long-term water security.
