Navi Mumbai: The much-anticipated CCTV surveillance project launched during the tenure of former NMMC Commissioner Abhijit Bangar remains incomplete even after three years. The Rs152 crore initiative aimed to install 1,524 high-definition cameras across the city, but as of now, only 1,300 have been installed, with just 410 in working condition.
In 2022, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) awarded the contract to Tata Advanced Systems to set up high-definition, speed detection, traffic, and evidence cameras. However, despite being a reputed company, Tata has been unable to complete the project on time.
A major challenge in the implementation is the lack of coordination between the police and municipal administration. While a well-equipped CCTV control room exists at the municipal headquarters, the police force currently has access to only four computers for monitoring footage.
According to the City Engineer Department of NMMC, over 95% of the cameras have been installed, but maintenance responsibilities have not been transferred to NMMC due to incomplete work. The contractor has been given a final 15-day ultimatum to finish the project.
