In line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, a new evaluation method will be introduced in all schools across Maharashtra from June, starting from Class 1. Unlike the earlier system where only teachers assessed students, the new approach includes peer evaluation by classmates, involvement of parents, and finally, evaluation by teachers.
This revised assessment system emphasizes a 360-degree evaluation model, focusing on students’ academic, physical, and intellectual development over a 12-year period. The initiative will be implemented statewide with special training for teachers at the district and taluka levels scheduled between June 2 and June 15. The schedule has been prepared by Rahul Rekhawar, Director of the State Council of Educational Research and Training.
Key Features of the New Evaluation System
Under the NEP 2020, the previous student assessment method has been revised. The new evaluation system will consider the student’s background and focus on their learning outcomes. School-based assessments will also be conducted.
Students will have the freedom to choose subjects based on their interests. The evaluation will incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based assessments, and students with exceptional talents will be given special encouragement.
For students who face learning challenges, targeted efforts will be made to help them overcome their difficulties. Based on this approach, a comprehensive progress report will be prepared for each student.
Structure of the New Evaluation Format
- Part 1 – General information about the student.
- Part 2 – Includes sections like Me and My Surroundings, progress summary, action plan, self-evaluation, peer evaluation, parent evaluation, and teacher evaluation.
- Part 3 – Final comprehensive summary at the end of the academic year.
According to Mahendra Ganpule from the Maharashtra Headmasters’ Association, “Previously, only teachers assessed students. Now, classmates and parents will also be a part of the evaluation process, resulting in a more complete picture of the student’s overall performance.”
The training programs will also focus on the philosophy that learning and evaluation go hand in hand, ensuring that the new methods are clearly understood and implemented effectively by educators.
