To address the imminent water shortage before the monsoon season, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has begun water rationing in seven wards under its jurisdiction starting June 4. With the exception of Digha, each ward will experience a half-day water cut twice a week. This initiative is expected to conserve approximately 50 million liters of water per week. The half-day water cut has been a regular measure since last year.
Although the monsoon is anticipated to arrive on time, the NMMC has taken this precautionary measure. According to the plan, all wards except Airoli and Digha will undergo a water cut in the evening twice a week. The Airoli ward will have one evening water cut per week, while the Digha ward will not be affected as it receives water from MIDC.
The NMMC’s water supply department states that these short-term measures will help meet water demand over an extended period. Currently, the Morbe Dam, which supplies water to the city, has enough stock for the next 52 days. If the monsoon is delayed, the civic body will need to manage the water supply with the remaining resources. However, the water cuts will be lifted once the monsoon arrives.
