In a major push towards sustainable waste management, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is set to accelerate its waste-to-energy and waste-to-gas projects at the Turbhe Scientific Solid Waste Management Facility. Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde recently inspected the site, stressing the need for modernization and advanced technology adoption to enhance efficiency.
The solid waste management system relies heavily on efficient processing sites, and the Turbhe MIDC facility, based on scientific landfill methods, is regarded as one of the best in the country. With the commencement of the Swachh Survekshan 2024 assessment, Commissioner Shinde, along with City Engineer Mr. Shirish Ardawad, conducted a detailed inspection of the site.
Navi Mumbai generates approximately 750 metric tons of waste daily, which is processed at this facility. Organic waste is converted into compost, while dry waste is processed into Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF), which is supplied to chemical industries, cement plants, and thermal power stations. Additionally, projects for waste-to-energy and waste-to-gas generation are being expedited to further enhance sustainability.
During his visit, Commissioner Shinde also emphasized improved internal cleanliness, expansion of tree plantations, and enhanced Construction & Demolition (C&D) Waste Processing Facilities. He directed that materials like crushed sand, gravel, and paver blocks generated at the facility should be used in municipal construction projects under a structured policy.
Efforts are underway under Dr. Shinde’s guidance to implement cutting-edge waste management technologies, ensuring that Navi Mumbai continues to lead in cleanliness and sustainability rankings.
