Navi Mumbai: As the much-anticipated Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) prepares for its scheduled inauguration in June 2025, a critical supporting infrastructure project—the Western Entry Interchange—is also advancing swiftly towards completion. Developed by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) in collaboration with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the interchange is expected to be ready by June 2025, aligning with the airport’s opening.
The Western Entry Interchange is designed to ensure seamless connectivity from the western side of Navi Mumbai, facilitating smooth access from Aamra Marg and the Ulwe Coastal Road directly to the airport. Once operational, the interchange will play a pivotal role in streamlining traffic flow, reducing congestion, and enhancing the commuter experience for travelers heading to NMIA from Mumbai and surrounding regions.
“This interchange is a vital link in our comprehensive connectivity plan for the Navi Mumbai International Airport,” said Vijay Singhal, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of CIDCO. “Alongside other key projects like the Eastern Entry Interchange and Ulwe Coastal Road, it will ensure hassle-free access to the airport from all directions and strengthen regional integration.”
The project features a half cloverleaf interchange, incorporating two loops, two ramps, a Vehicular Underpass (VUP), and a small bridge across the Ulwe Resource Channel. It connects to a 1.2 km elevated airport link road, which is part of the Ulwe Coastal Road, further integrating the airport with the road network leading to the Atal Setu sea bridge and beyond.
In parallel with the interchange development, CIDCO and NHAI are executing a series of infrastructure initiatives aimed at bolstering airport connectivity. The Western Entry Interchange forms part of the larger Mumbai-JNPT Port Connectivity Project, overseen by the Mumbai JNPT Port Road Company Ltd (MJPRCL), a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) jointly promoted by NHAI, JNPT, and CIDCO.
CIDCO has contributed land valued at over Rs 3,000 crore to the project, underscoring its commitment to creating a seamless transportation ecosystem for NMIA. The integrated road network is expected to significantly enhance cargo and passenger movement, positioning NMIA as a key hub in India’s aviation and logistics landscape.
With the completion of the Western Entry Interchange and associated infrastructure, NMIA will enjoy multimodal connectivity, reducing travel time, improving operational efficiency, and boosting economic growth in the Navi Mumbai region.
The Western Entry Interchange stands as a testament to coordinated planning and execution, marking a major milestone in the countdown to the operationalization of India’s next major international airport.
