Mumbai – The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has set a May 31, 2025, deadline to complete the desilting of major and minor drains across Mumbai. To ensure efficiency and transparency, the civic body closely monitors real-time operations and the status of the desilting work, which commenced on March 25, 2025.
Abhijit Bangar, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects), recently inspected the ongoing desilting efforts and directed that engineers remain present at work sites, update real-time data in the computerized monitoring system, and strictly adhere to project deadlines.
Bangar visited several key drains during his on-site review, including Mankhurd Nala, Deonar Nala, Lakshmibagh Nala, and the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road culvert. Significant solid waste accumulation was found at Mankhurd and Deonar drains, largely due to illegal dumping by local settlements and scrap dealers. To prevent further blockages, BMC will install high protective nets and restrict access to drains in these areas. The presence of floating plastic waste was identified as a major concern, prompting the decision to install additional fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) nets and floating trash booms at critical locations.
A key issue highlighted during the inspection was the obstruction of a 250-meter stormwater pipeline in Mankhurd due to metro construction. Bangar directed Metro authorities to coordinate with BMC and ensure the pipeline is restored before the monsoon. At Bhandup railway station, officials noted a missing link in the stormwater drainage system, which contributed to severe waterlogging last year. BMC is pushing for an immediate temporary connection between the railway’s stormwater system and the municipal drainage network to prevent a recurrence.
As part of flood prevention efforts, BMC has planned a mini pumping station at Maharashtra Nagar Subway, with temporary pumps being installed until the permanent facility is completed. Bangar has also instructed officials to ensure systematic, end-to-end desilting of each drain, with daily progress updates being recorded.
Bangar issued a strict warning against negligence, stating that regular monitoring will continue, and no lapses will be tolerated. “With just two months left before the monsoon, BMC is working on a war footing to complete the desilting process in time, aiming to minimize waterlogging and urban flooding risks across the city,” said Bangar.
