Mumbai Marathon 2025: To Stay Healthy While Running, Keep These Things in Mind

Date:

The Mumbai Marathon 2025 is scheduled for 19th January. The Marathon, which takes place on the third Sunday of January each year, is expected to witness the participation of over 60,000 runners.

However, with temperatures expected to rise as high as 35°C this year, runners will have an additional challenge to face. Without proper planning, players run the risk of experiencing cramps, dehydration, or even more serious health problems including heart attacks. In such a situation, the doctors have advised the runners not to be careless about their health while running the marathon.

Pre-Marathon Preparation

• Practice daily • Before the race, warm up properly • Drink water, syrup and glucose solution.

Warning Signs to Watch For

Participants should be alert to these symptoms during the race and stop running immediately if they occur:

  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Dry mouth
  • Dizziness or restlessness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Chest or arm pain
  • Heartbeat too fast

Act Wisely while Running

Dr. Ajay Chaurasia, head of the Cardiology Department of Nair Hospital, urged runners to prioritize their health over their enthusiasm. Continue practicing running. No matter how much practice you have done, if you feel pain in chest, back, arms, vomiting, fatigue or difficulty in breathing, then stop immediately.

Precautions for High-Risk people

Dr. Charan Lanjewar, Unit Head of Cardiology Department of KEM Hospital, said that people who are suffering from hypertension, diabetes or heart disease and are participating in marathon, then they should get lipid profile, ECG test done. Those with a family history of heart attacks should also consult their doctors before participating.

Pollution and Breathing Issues

Dr. Sajeev Mehta, Senior Consultant Pulmonologist at Lilavati Hospital, pointed out that while pollution cannot be avoided, wearing masks while running may not be feasible. People with chronic respiratory conditions should take part in the marathon only after consulting their doctor. Those suffering from allergic rhinitis should keep nasal and lung spray with them. If you are short of breath while running, stop immediately and go to a nearby medical camp and contact a doctor.

Weather and Air Quality: A Double Challenge

The maximum temperature of Mumbai is predicted to reach 34 to 35 degrees Celsius on Sunday. In such a situation, runners will face heat stress alongside the usual physical strain. According to the weather expert, the winds blowing from east to west will not allow the sea breeze to set in, due to which the day temperature will remain high. Additionally, air quality should be monitored closely. Dr. Rohit Hegde, Associate Professor of Pulmonology at JJ Hospital, suggested runners:

  • Check air quality before heading out.
  • Use rescue inhalers 15 minutes before running if prescribed.
  • Stay hydrated throughout the marathon.
  • Take a bath after running, so that your clothes and hair are clean.
