The Mumbai Cyber Department has introduced strict new guidelines to tackle ticket scalping at high demand events starting December 15. These measures designed to protect event organizers and genuine fans to follow allegations of black market ticket sales for the Coldplay concert in Navi Mumbai.
Name-Based Tickets and QR Code Security
From mid-December all major concerts and events must use name based tickets which will include QR codes linked to buyer information. Attendees will need to verify their identity at the venue using a government issued ID. Advanced security features like dynamic QR codes and tamper proof wristbands will further strengthen the process.
An exception has been made for the Maroon 5 concert on December 3 as platforms lack sufficient time to adapt to the new rules.
Digital Platforms Under Scrutiny
The Cyber Department has issued notices to platforms like BookMyShow, Paytm Insider and Zomato Live under Section 168 of the Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). These platforms are required to adopt:
- AI systems to block bot traffic.
- Waitlist systems for ticket sales.
- Tools to track suspicious activities such as repeated use of the same payment methods or contact details.
- Monitoring of social media and forums for inflated ticket resales.
On-Ground Vigilance
Additional measures include undercover agents at event venues, random identity checks and OTP verification. These efforts aim to curb unauthorized ticket resales and ensure fair access to genuine fans.
A Step Towards Fairness
An officer explained that these guidelines will deter black market practices where tickets are sold at exorbitant prices making events inaccessible to true fans.
By implementing these measures, Mumbai is setting a precedent for fairness and transparency in ticket sales.
