As part of monsoon preparedness, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has commenced the pruning of branches of trees across the city. This pre-monsoon tree maintenance initiative is aimed at minimizing the risks of fallen branches and debris during the heavy rains, stated a BMC official.
To keep the residents informed, the BMC’s Garden Department has announced that the schedule for tree pruning in each locality will be shared via the official social media platforms of the respective Ward Offices starting April 21, 2025. Additionally, the pruning schedule will be displayed on notice boards within the concerned administrative departments.
BMC Commissioner, Mr. Bhushan Gagarani, and Additional Commissioner (Eastern Suburbs), Dr. Amit Saini, have emphasized the importance of completing pre-monsoon tasks on time. They directed all concerned departments to ensure the timely execution of these vital works. Under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner (Gardens), Mr. Ajit Ambi, the Garden Department has accelerated efforts to ensure that all tasks are completed efficiently.
As per the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Tree Protection and Preservation Act, 1975, the BMC carries out the pruning of trees to ensure public safety. The pre-monsoon operations primarily focus on removing dead or dangerous trees, pruning excessive branches, clearing fallen trees, replanting, and stabilizing tree trunks. The BMC has also planned for the application of pesticides to protect the trees from pests.
However, during the pruning process, parked vehicles under trees have posed a challenge. If the vehicle owners are not present, it has led to delays in completing the work. To mitigate this, the Garden Department has urged citizens to keep their vehicles parked away from trees during the pruning period.
The schedule for the pruning work will be available on social media and on notice boards in each ward office. Citizens are advised to check the schedule, ensure their vehicles are parked appropriately, and cooperate with the ongoing tree maintenance efforts.
Additionally, private housing societies are encouraged to seek prior permission from the Municipal Corporation before conducting tree pruning within their premises, in alignment with the BMC’s regulations.
The BMC assures that all necessary machinery and manpower are available to ensure the successful completion of this essential pre-monsoon maintenance work.
