Major Demolition Drive in Nerul, Belapur to Curb Illegal Constructions

Date:

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) conducted a major demolition drive in the Nerul and Belapur wards, targeting unauthorized constructions that remained standing despite prior notices. The action was carried out under the directives of Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde and the guidance of Additional Commissioner (2) Dr. Rahul Gethe and Deputy Commissioner (Encroachment) Bhagwat Doiphode.

In the Nerul division, unauthorised G+3 RCC structures at Sector 10 were demolished. Both had been served notices under Section 54 of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act, 1966, on March 3, 2025. However, since the notice period expired without voluntary removal of the illegal structures, the NMMC carried out a demolition drive last week. The operation was led by Assistant Commissioner and Division Officer Sagar More and Junior Engineer Sanjay Sontakke, with the support of 10 laborers, two breakers, two gas cutters, security personnel, and a police squad from the Encroachment Department.

A similar operation was conducted in the Belapur division, where unauthorised structures were found at properties owned by Amol Tandel, Ganesh R. Tandel and Rohini Patil in Karave Village. Despite receiving notices under Section 54 of the MRTP Act, they did not remove the unauthorised constructions voluntarily. As a result, the Belapur ward office carried out a demolition drive.

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has warned that similar strict actions will continue in the future to curb illegal constructions and maintain urban planning regulations.
