Once operational, travel time between Thane and NMIA will drop from 90 minutes to just 30 minutes, relieving pressure on the Eastern Express Highway and Thane-Belapur Road.
Mumbai: On Wednesday, the Maharashtra State Cabinet, led by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, approved a 25-kilometer elevated road project worth Rs. 6,363 crore that would connect Thane to the future Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). CIDCO will use a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model to carry out the project.
Travel Time to Be Reduce to 30 Minutes
Declared a “major urban infrastructure initiative,” the six-lane corridor will feature six interchanges, enabling vehicles to travel at speeds of up to 100 km/hr. Once operational, travel time between Thane and NMIA will drop from 90 minutes to just 30 minutes, relieving pressure on the Eastern Express Highway and Thane-Belapur Road.
CIDCO has also been authorized to acquire additional land along the corridor for commercial development and use government-owned land beneath the elevated road at nominal rates. All necessary approvals must be secured within six months. While the project is expected to take three years, environmental clearances and land acquisition could affect the timeline.
Connectivity and Economic Boost
Officials expect the elevated corridor to significantly decongest existing road networks while boosting economic growth by improving access to NMIA, which is poised to become one of India’s largest aviation hubs.
