In a major shift in mango exports, Gujarat-grown Kesar mango has overtaken the delicate Alphonso to become India’s most exported mango, especially to the United States. Once dominated by Alphonso, the US is now the largest market for Indian mangoes, with Kesar rising as the new favorite thanks to its longer shelf life and robust structure.
In the last financial year, Kesar mango exports reached a global value of $11.25 million, surpassing Alphonso’s $8.68 million. The popularity of Kesar isn’t limited to the US; it is gaining ground in several other major markets including Saudi Arabia, the UK, Canada, Germany, Kuwait, Oman, and the Netherlands.
Why Kesar Outshines Alphonso
Kesar mango’s success is no ordinary tale. Unlike Alphonso, which is extremely delicate and poses several challenges during export, Kesar is more durable and better suited for international shipping. Its strong texture and extended shelf life make it ideal for long-haul exports. Furthermore, emotional connections of the Gujarati diaspora in the US have contributed significantly to the mango’s rising demand.
Exporters are now actively converting Alphonso lovers in America into Kesar fans, citing logistical advantages and reduced spoilage.
Mango Demand Soars Post-COVID
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, American consumers have become increasingly health-conscious. Rich in vitamins and minerals, Indian mangoes—particularly Kesar—have seen a sharp rise in demand.
However, exporting mangoes to the US remains costly and complex. Up to 60–65% of retail mango prices in the US go towards shipping costs. The journey from Gujarat to American shelves takes about five days and includes several mandated steps: hot water treatment, refrigerated transport to Navi Mumbai, and irradiation—an FDA requirement. The irradiation process alone costs Rs 150 for a pack of three mangoes, which are sold in the US for $35–$40.
In contrast, exporting to the UAE is easier and faster, with mangoes reaching within a week via sea freight. US-bound mangoes, once packaged and certified, cannot be diverted to other destinations, adding to the complexity.
From Setback to Comeback
During the 2020–21 pandemic, mango exports to the US halted because USDA inspectors couldn’t travel to India. Exports resumed in 2022 with a focus on Alphonso. That year, Kesar exports were just $2.92 million, while Alphonso stood at $6.08 million. However, within three years, Kesar exports surged by 285%, pushing Alphonso to second place.
From April 2024 to January 2025, India exported $24.97 million worth of mangoes and mango products to the US, while the UAE followed at $20.78 million. Other popular Indian varieties exported globally include Langra, Dussehri, Chausa, Totapuri, and Mallika.
