Mumbai: In order to prevent the fraudulent sale of mangoes under the Devgad Hapus name, the Devgad Taluka Mango Growers’ Cooperative Society has introduced UID barcodes on mangoes starting this year. The move aims to ensure authenticity and protect consumers from being misled by counterfeit mangoes.
The Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) has already started receiving mangoes with these barcodes. On Thursday, 200 dozen barcode-labeled Devgad Hapus mangoes arrived at the market, marking the beginning of a transparent and foolproof identification system.
Ensuring Authenticity Amid Market Fraud
Devgad Hapus mangoes, renowned for their superior quality and taste, are often counterfeited in the market. Mangoes from Karnataka and other regions are frequently packed in Devgad Hapus-branded boxes and sold as genuine. Since consumers usually rely on packaging, they struggle to differentiate between the authentic Devgad Hapus and lookalike varieties from other states.
To tackle this issue, the cooperative society has implemented a barcode system that allows consumers to verify the mango’s origin by simply scanning the UID sticker. This initiative ensures that only authentic Devgad Hapus mangoes reach the market.
5 Million Barcode Stickers Distributed
As part of this initiative, 5 million barcode stickers have been distributed in Devgad. Scanning these stickers will provide detailed information about the mangoes, helping buyers make informed and confident purchases.
According to Sanjay Pansare, Director of the Fruit Market, the introduction of UID barcodes is a game-changer. “Now, identifying genuine Devgad Hapus mangoes will be effortless for consumers, ensuring they get what they pay for,” he said.
With this initiative, mango lovers can finally enjoy authentic Devgad Hapus mangoes without fear of being misled by fraudulent sellers.
