IIT Kanpur has launched new initiatives to curb the rising trend of student suicides. Institute Director, Professor Manindra Agrawal, announced the establishment of a Center for Mental Wellness to support students’ mental health. The center will have dedicated psychologists available for counseling. In the past 15-16 months, the institute has reported five suicide cases, three of which involved research scholars.
Professor Agrawal emphasized that postgraduate and research students face unique challenges, requiring specialized support. In addition to existing counseling services, the new wellness center will provide professional psychological assistance. The institute assures that all student consultations with psychologists will remain confidential.
Guidelines for Research Supervisors to Be Issued Separately
Following the recent suicide of a research scholar, allegations surfaced against a faculty member, leading the administration to seal a laboratory and suspend the research guide’s work. Addressing concerns over academic pressure, Professor Agrawal stated that while a certain level of pressure can enhance performance, a balanced and stress-free environment is also essential. To ensure this, new guidelines for research supervisors will be introduced.
Additionally, IIT Kanpur has collaborated with The Art of Living Foundation to organize special training sessions on campus, aimed at promoting mental well-being among students.
